Nerver tried polenta? This is a recipe that you need to give a go in oder to see how simple it is. Polenta is less ‘heavy’ that pasta and makes a nice change but it can be dry and bland - so try this recipe below. Afraid of the mess it’ll create on the table? Polenta actually scoops up really easily and persil can take care of the rest!* If not, serve on long wooden boards, which is an Italian tradition.

The technique in this recipe are ideal for older children, however, young ones will love the novelty of eating from the table!

You'll need:

For the sauce

  • 500g minced beef
  • 2 tbsp Bortolli olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
  • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 small celery stick, finely chopped
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped (no seeds, stalk or pith)
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 100g broccoli stems (weighed without the big stalk)
  • 2 tins chopped tomatoes
  • 3 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • A good twist of black pepper
  • 1 ½ tsp sugar

For the polenta:

  • 2 Knorr vegetable stock cubes
  • 50ml boiled water
  • 600ml semi skimmed milk
  • 200ml double cream
  • 225g quick cook polenta grains
  • Plus

  • Grated parmesan to serve
